A fire alarm went off in the Union on Monday morning, forcing students and staff to evacuate the building.
The Salt Lake City Fire Department responded 20 minutes after the alarms went off. Five minutes after, the alarms stopped and students were allowed to re-enter the building.
Branden Dalley, associate director of the Union, said cooking fumes set off the alarms.
“It was smoke from the Chartwells kitchen,” Dalley said.
Aaron Hildreth, a political science major who works for the Union front desk, said he hoped that his laptop wouldn’t get stolen during the evacuation. Justin Parnell, an English major, was in the Union completing his creative writing homework when the alarm went off.
“I feel kind of annoyed,” Parnell said. He said the experience has inspired him to write a poem.
