In regards to Spencer Merrick’s article (“Read the fine print before getting a gym membership,” Feb. 24), I would just like to mention that 24 Hour Fitness doesn’t have contracts like Gold’s Gym does. New members pay an enrollment fee of about $70 (which can usually be waived anyway with their frequent promotions) and then a monthly fee. Members can cancel at any time or even put their membership on a short- or long-term freeze if they were to go on, say, a mission or something.
The only reason I defend 24 Hour Fitness is because I’m a complete and utter fitness guru and I picked my gym wisely based on their membership perks. Gold’s Gym, on the other hand, I can’t speak much for. I’ve heard awful things.
