The Utah women’s tennis team hadn’t won a match in two weeks. Ditto for the men’s squad.
That all changed this weekend.
The unranked men’s team (7-4) marched up to Idaho this weekend and left with two impressive victories under its belt. Most prevalently, Utah bested the No. 27 Boise State Broncos (7-5) on their home court with a score of 4-3.
True freshman John Taylor won the decisive match for the Utes in the No. 4 slot when faced-up against Bronco Cristian Hodel, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, (7-1). Utah got off to a quick, impressive start as the team swept the doubles portion of the day from Boise State. The No. 1-slotted tandem of Philip Eilers and Wes Hancock beat Kean Feeder and James Meredith, 8-6.
“This was a great win for the guys on the team,” said head coach F.D. Robbins in a statement. “I am proud of their effort, they came out and fought hard. This was a great win for the program.”
On Friday, the Utes faced up against the 7-4 Idaho Vandals and won another close match, 4-3.
Eilers and Hancock led the way again, as they started the day off right for Utah by beating the duo of Artem Kuznetsov and Alexandru Joitoiu, 8-4.
The No. 43 women’s squad got back on the winning track yesterday as they hosted and beat the Nevada Wolfpack with a score of 5-2. Utah, now 4-4, Senior Leigh Walsh clinched the match for the Utes by besting Maria Mizyuk, 7-6, 6-4.
“This match felt like a win over a ranked team,” said head coach Mat Iandolo in a statement. “Though they are not ranked, they are every bit as good as a team in the top 75.”
