Not even the news is immune to the poor financial climate.
Under financial pressure and in an effort to prevent more debilitating budget cuts in the future, The Daily Utah Chronicle staff has decided to suspend the summer print edition. Readers who encounter empty paper racks during Summer Semester can rest assured that the same quality of news and sports coverage will still be available online on The Chronicle’s Web site.
Although we feel our print edition is vital, especially during Fall and Spring semesters, we would rather publish exclusively on the Internet during the summer when there are fewer students on campus than be forced to cut printing days during the traditional school year. The other option for cutting costs would have been to minimize the size of our staff or decrease our fall and spring printing schedule, which would make it difficult to sustain the same level of journalism.
The summer edition is usually printed weekly. Moving completely online will free the paper of a weekly schedule in favor of a constant stream of breaking news and multimedia content.
Most importantly, this is a temporary change. The print edition will return with Fall Semester. Meanwhile, we remain committed to providing quality campus news online throughout the summer.
