Weather warnings were in effect Monday morning, but the U’s alert system wasn’t.
Students were concerned about the sudden storm weather, which included lightning, that began around 10 a.m., according to the National Weather Services for Salt Lake City. But U students did not receive notifications through e-mail, telephone or text message from the U Emergency Program until about 2:30 p.m. The emergency e-mails and texts informed students to expect the storm to reach campus, but gallons of rain and cracks of lightning were already at the U.
“Usually the U’s alerts are pretty reliable,” said Alex Furst, an undecided sophomore. “It was a little delayed so I don’t know what happened today.”
Along with several other meteorology stations, the U.S. Weather Forecast Center updated its forecast around 11:30 a.m., to notify Utah residents to beware of a storm.
“We just watched the Doppler radar and when we felt it became local that’s when we decided to notify the campus,” said Leslie Chatelain, vice president of Administrative Services.
