The U’s Muslim Student Association is trying to feed the hungry and homeless.
The MSAUU is participating in the Muslims United Against Hunger food drive for Utah’s needy, which started last month during the holy month of Ramadan. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, so they are able to focus more time on prayer and purifying their lives through self-restraint and good deeds.
The project focuses not only on feeding the hungry, but also on bridging the gap between the diverse people8212;of all religious leanings8212;involved, said MSAUU President Najib Amiri. Students and alumni from the U and Weber State University, among others, are sponsoring the drive.
The participants’ goal is to collect 5,000 cans of food. They’ve collected 2,000 so far.
“We believe one does not need to orchestrate a big event or raise thousands of dollars to make an impact,” Mohmand said. A simple act of charity or support can benefit someone’s life, she said.
The MSAUU is helping the cause by volunteering with publicity and donating basic necessities. Volunteers have placed boxes near the Union, LDS Institute, Health Sciences Education Building, the Huntsman Cancer Institute and the Social and Behavioral Science Building to make it easier for students to contribute food and basic necessities to the project.
U students can also donate money that will be used toward buying food for the struggling and hungry individuals, according to the MUAH organization’s blog.
The drive will continue until Sept. 28.
