Growing up, I always thought candy tasted better on Halloween. Maybe because it was free and fun to get. But Halloween isn’t just about the free candy anymore. That might be enough to satisfy the kid in you, but for the hungry adult, there is food8212;free food8212;to be found as well if you know where to look. That’s where we’ve got your back.
Chipotle Mexican Grill is hosting a free burrito day on Halloween. Well, technically it’s not an all-access, no-holds-barred free burrito day. Colin, who apparently manages Chipotle’s Facebook presence, had this clarification to offer. “Well, it is not “free burrito day’ per se. It is Boorito and you have to come in dressed up as your favorite burrito, bowl, salad or tacos. And it is from 6 pm – close at all locations.”
Dressed up as a burrito you say? Indeed, that is the requirement for the free grub. However, it is Chipotle, an establishment known more for brand marketing with their silver-bullet foil wrappings than for the food itself8212;which, for the record, is still better than typical Tex-Mex feeding troughs like Cafe Rio. So I imagine those behind the marketing ploy hope to see people adorned in all sorts of foil for the “Boo-rito” prize, which could be more expensive than just forking over the cash for some neatly-wrapped beans.
Invariably, every Halloween there are the Grease kids: The “50s poodle skirts and leather jackets crew. If that’s you, make the evening complete with all-American food at a 1950 price. Sonic offers 50 cent corn dogs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., whether or not you wear a poodle skirt or other costume.
The local gourmet burger joint Acme Burger Company also has a free treat to offer costumed diners. If you have never tried sweet potato fries, now is your chance, without the risk of being out any dough. Don’t be scared of crowds either. Acme manager Ashley Cross said the restaurant typically is not very busy on Halloween. This promotion might change that, however. The sweet potato fries offer starts today and continues through Halloween. So if you really like your costume, and spent more than you wanted to on it, you can get some mileage over the whole weekend at Acme and some free food to boot.
Taco Bell has also jumped on the bandwagon by offering a free black jack taco after 6 p.m. Halloween night. Everyone’s favorite late-night south of the border grub says it’s not a trick, it’s their treat. Get it? Cause it’s Halloween.
Poor college students have many reasons to go for the freebies. Personally I am taking my shopping list door to door Halloween night, We’ll see how that works. But whether or not you still go trick-or-treating for candy, there is no reason you shouldn’t go for some real grub too. And when it’s free and fun in the getting, it totally tastes better.
