Former U professor Grant Smith will not serve time in jail after being convicted for viewing child pornography as long as he stays within the limits of his probation.
A Boston judge sentenced Smith to two and a half years in prison but suspended the sentence in favor of five years probation in Utah, according to the Associated Press. Smith must follow Utah’s sex offender laws and obey restrictions regarding contact with children and internet use.
Smith pleaded guilty to the charges in court Thursday to one count of possessing child pornography.
He resigned from his position as a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering shortly after he was caught viewing child pornography during a flight from Salt Lake City to Boston in 2011.

His actions in the office too, of course. Where is the edit option?

Do people get thrown in jail for watching horror movies? The images one chooses to look at is far removed the the actions one chooses to take. This monkey did good work for the University and if his actions outside of the office do not harm other individuals, his mind contributing to progress at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering is better for society as a whole. His collegues were overloaded with work and suffered because of his absense.
In consideration of the extremes in regards to actions implied by the images, maybe we can learn from our ancestors who evaded war, “Over and over he has seen neighboring bonobo colonies gather near a common border as the males prepare to do battle. Ape warfare can indeed be violent. But when the bonobos are ready to fight, the females often charge across the boundary and start making out with both genders on the other side.” http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/god-moral/story?id=18898993&page=2#.UWYwjys4Vhk

I agree with the other commenter on here why wouldn’t they throw the book at him? Child porn is nothing small. By putting him on probation its simply a “slap on the wrist” and something small…

This guy… at first I was willing to wait and hear his side of the story. After all, this was just an allegation. He wasn’t convicted. But at this point, it seems clear. He isn’t even denying it. He was sitting on an airplane, looking at child porn on his laptop. What a moron. Good riddance.
