Fall Out Boy – Save Rock and Roll
After going on hiatus in 2009, Fall Out Boy surprised fans everywhere by announcing not only were they back together, but they have recorded a new album and are going on tour to smaller venues all around the United States. They also released the first single from the album My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark (Light Em’ Up) which immediately began lighting up airwaves all over the country. I have been a fan of Fall Out Boy for about 10 years now, but I became a REALLY big fan of their music just in the last 5 years or so. When I listen to Fall Out Boy, I put all of their albums on shuffle so I don’t prefer one album over the other – I like the whole body of work and this is also the case with their new album Save Rock and Roll.
Fall Out Boy’s new album Save Rock and Roll may be their best work to date. I have had it on permanent repeat in my car ever since it came out a month or so ago. It’s always hard for a band that has put out good albums in the past to keep improving their music album to album but Fall Out Boy seem to have found the key to make this happen. The track listing is as follows (notice all the guest artists on the album):
1. The Phoenix
2. My Songs Know What You Did in The Dark (Light Em Up)
3. Alone Together
4. Where Did The Party Go
5. Just One Yesterday
6. The Mighty Fall – feat. Big Sean
7. Miss Missing You
8. Death Valley
9. Young Vocanoes
10. Rat a Tat – feat. Courtney Love
11. Save Rock and Roll – feat. Elton John
The album starts out with The Phoenix, a very angry sounding song that sets the tone for the entire album. To me this is a great opening track because it feels like they’re saying “we’re back, and we’re better than we’ve ever been” and that song leads right into the song that has been blowing up the airwaves everywhere My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark (Light Em Up) which is a great song that feels like a big F-You! to the media who can’t help but write pure science fiction about them just for a story in the latest Teen Beat magazine.
From there the album changes pace and gets into a big of a more dancy-rock. Some people don’t like the new sub-genre of rock that has a dance beat to it, but I think Fall Out boy just realizes rock is always changing and for the next few years, this is the way rock is going to sound and they’re going to be one of the first to it.
Like all Fall Out Boy albums, the lyrics are really the strong point of any of their songs and this album is no exception and they really flaunt this fact in Alone Together. One of the things about this album that is different from other albums by Fall Out Boy is they reached out to some other acts for guest appearances including Big Sean, Courtney Love and none other than Sir Elton John himself.
Aside from their current single, there are a many tracks on this album I anticipate will be lighting up out radio airwaves for the next few years including Alone Together, Young Volcanoes, and lastly the title track from the album Save Rock and Roll which features Elton John on piano and half of the vocals. Save Rock and Roll is by far my favorite song on the album and is the perfect song to wrap up an album I anticipate will be receiving many awards this year.
The song Save Rock and Roll starts out with a slow beat featuring Elton John on piano. The first verse includes a very well placed f*ck you, goes into a power-anthem chorus, and then Elton John’s voice lights up the second verse. This song is amazing and makes reference to some of their old material which was great for us fans who have been following them for a long time.
I would highly suggest picking up this album, although you may already own it. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the charts of 30+ other countries as well with over 154,000 copies of the album sold in the United States in the first week alone.
You can get Save Rock and Roll on iTunes, Spotify, or any brick-and-mortar record store in your area.
