Students twerked to dubstep and ate cookies with frosted block Us at the 2013 Homecoming Dance on Friday night.
“The greatest thing about Homecoming is we get a huge cross-section of campus,” said ASUU communication advisor Tom Hurtado, “We get a lot of international students coming and they’re just having a great time and get to participate in the tradition.”
The dance was held at The Depot at The Gateway Mall from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Senior class president Kendahl Melvin, a senior in political science said there were 1,200 available tickets, and that she expected the dance to sell out as the night went on.
“We’ve been working on it probably, talking about it since June, “ Melvin said, “but working on it really hard since the beginning of August.”
The man behind the turntables was DJ Marcus Wing, who is a house DJ at Studio 600. Wing played music from electronic genres, ranging from Trap Bass to dubstep and party jams as well as remixed Motown classics.
Thamer Almansour, a junior in architecture, said he enjoyed the dance, even though he did not like the music.
“It was kind of fun. The Crimson Night one is better,” Almansour said.
Valeria Reynolds, a senior in sociology at Utah Valley University, said she was impressed and not expecting the party atmosphere.
“I think it’s pretty good. It’s a lot better than the dances at my school,” she said.
ASUU provided an arrangement of snacks and sweets. The snacks included German chocolate cake bits, fudge brownies, cake pops (cake dipped into chocolate coating and served on a stick) and sugar cookies covered in glaze with a U emblem on the top. The cookies were purchased from Blue Lemon restaurant and bakery, Melvin said.
According to security officers, as of 12:30 a.m. there were no injuries, arrests or mishaps at the event.
