The Marriott Library is offering everything from fiction novels to books on political science at bargain prices this week at the Fall Semester Book Sale.
The book sale, which started Monday morning, will run through the week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Prices will drop each day. The sale is being held in room 1100A on the first floor of the library. The room is filled with shelves and bins full of books that will find a new home by the end of the week.
Most of the books at the sale came from donations made by students at the U, faculty and community members. Books that are too outdated for the university’s use or are duplicates of ones already in the library’s general collection were put into the book sale.
“We want to move the donations along to other people because we can’t add every single book we get donated,” said Carly Anderson, supervisor of collections services.
The money raised from the sale will be put into an acquisitions fund for the library to add other books to the general collection.
“There are very few [books] left [at the end of the week,]” said Karen Moaddeli, collections services manager. “The rest get recycled [or donated to local schools].”
Not all of the remaining books will be recycled. Some will be donated to local schools.
The library holds a book sale once in the Fall Semester and once in the Spring Semester. Moaddeli said that since this is the first time the sale has gone on this early in the semester it is impossible to estimate the amount of money they expect to bring in. She also said that it is almost impossible to guess how many books are on sale, but that the shelves will be kept fully stocked.
The sale offers books on almost every topic, including foreign languages, fiction, history, philosophy, religious texts and science.
On Monday, hardcovers were $2 and paperbacks were $1. The costs will drop to $1 for hardbacks and 50 cents for paper copies Tuesday. Wednesday will offer a deal for a full bag of books for $5 and the price will drop to $3 per bag on Thursday. On Friday all remaining books will be completely free.
