The Union Programming Council is hosting a project in which students create or decorate a block U to raise money for a scholarship.
From now until Feb. 1, students and local artists can use any medium, from paint to wire to papier-mâché, as long as they incorporate the trademark block U into their piece. UPC will provide them with a wooden block U for those looking to decorate the U rather than create it. UPC will accept submissions until the February deadline.
All submissions will be auctioned off at the Union Development Dinner in April, with the proceeds going to the Union Student Leadership Scholarship fund. The scholarship goes to students engaged in leadership through the Union that have contributed to the university community and have completed one full academic year. The purpose of the Block U painting project is not to determine a winner but to raise as much money as possible for the scholarship fund and give local artists and students the chance to express themselves.
According to Mary Neville, Director of Arts and Special Events at UPC, quite a few students have already contacted UPC with an interest in the program.
“We can’t wait to see what they come up with,” Neville said.
