After appearing in just four games last season, sophomore Geoff Norwood is making an impact in 2013. As Utah’s punt returner, he rarely calls for the fair catch. That confidence translates off the field, as he claims he is the absolute best at video games, can thrive in any position on the baseball diamond, and can ball with the best of them on the hardwood.
CM: What are the social benefits of being on the football team?
GN: It’s an honor because there’s a lot of people trying to be in my shoes right now. I get a lot of texts saying ‘congratulations in the game’ … All my friends back home, they’re not even going to college right now actually, they’re all workin’. It would kill them to come to a D1 school and at least get a chance to play. So it’s an honor to be here.
CM: You keep in touch with all of your friends back in California?
GN: They watch the game every week, and they’ll call me. They’ll text me at halftime then they’ll call me. I won’t get none of it till after the game, and then I’ll see about 26 text messages. It’s either good or bad or they’re clownin’ on me.
CM: What was the funniest message you got from someone clownin’ on you?
GN: The funniest was when we played UCLA, and I missed a catch and it got picked. I got a text, and it said, ‘you need to put glue on your hands because your hands ain’t sticky enough,’ and I just laughed. I didn’t take it to heart because it’s just my friends, they’re gonna clown me if I do bad regardless.
CM: We heard Jake Murphy talking about how Adam Schulz throws. What’s your take?
GN: He can throw it fast. Like when I first got here and I saw him first throw the ball, I was amazed. The ball was movin’ so fast, and you can tell the difference between him and Travis. Travis is a good quarterback too. It’s just when it comes to canon-wise, I’ll choose Schulz.
CM: He throws harder than Travis Wilson?
GN: I think so, because he’s broken fingers.
CM: On this team?
GN: Mine.
CM: How did that happen?
GN: It was a five-yard-and-in, and he threw the ball so fast. I caught it, but my middle finger was out of place. It was at practice. Don’t nobody know about it because as soon as I figured it out, I grabbed it and I pulled it back.
CM: Do you have any hobbies?
GN: I play every sport. I do love baseball. I started baseball when I was two, basketball when I was four, and football when I was five. I played QB at first, and I moved to D-line because I got big. Then I got skinny again, so I moved to fullback. Then I got skinnier and went to running back then receiver and punt returner.
CM: Alright, let’s talk about baseball. Are you more of a fan or a player?
GN: Yeah, I’m a Boston Red Sox fan. I love the Red Sox. I don’t get a chance to watch it … but I do watch the big plays, I like to see that. I played third, short stop, second, first, catcher, outfield, and pitcher. Yeah, I basically played everything. Wherever the coach needed to put me, I just played it.
CM: A lot of the guys on the team like to play NCAA College Football on Xbox. Do you play?
GN: I’m the best, can’t nobody beat me in that. I only play when someone will actually play me. I’m just naturally that good.
CM: So nobody wants to play you?
GN: Nah. The only person that beat me is my brother. Until tonight. I will play him, and I will beat him.
CM: What else would you want the students at the U to know about you?
GN: I’m very funny at some times. Some times I’m very serious, but right now, I’m just mellow. I’m very tired. I’m so tired right now.
