The ASUU Assembly and Senate passed a joint bill in January to fund the cost of additional water bottle refill stations across campus. The bill allocated $9,500 to cover half the cost for the purchase and installation of the stations.
The bill was Rep. Mark Pittman’s second sustainability bill to pass through the legislative branch of ASUU this academic year. The bill included an initiative to have each college at the U agree to install at least one refill station. Pittman said on Feb. 24 that U president David Pershing has also signed the initiative.
“[He] agreed to my request, and the U’s building codes are being changed so that there is at least one of these stations in all new buildings on campus,” Pittman said. “I am currently putting together the list of where the stations will go.”
Pittman said at the assembly that the College of Nursing and the College of Fine Arts have signed in support and that several other colleges had expressed interest in the bill. Initially, Pittman said he expected seven new stations to be installed, but on Feb. 24 he said the number had more than doubled to 15 new stations by the end of the year.
“I am thrilled about the progress we’ve been able to make so far and the U’s willingness and support in partnering with ASUU for the U’s success,” Pittman said.
Pittman’s first sustainability bill allocated $10,000 to fund four electric car charging stations around student housing in the Nov. 2013 Assembly and Senate meetings.
