Moana Ofahengaue, a 20-year-old male U student, was injured in a scooter accident Sunday night.
Ofahengaue, a freshman defensive lineman on the U football team, is currently in critical condition after sustaining head injuries in the accident, according to a U press release email.
The incident occurred near 9:30 p.m. on Hempstead Road by Fort Douglas, where students commonly drive to access the dorms on upper campus.
A witness reported to U Police that Ofahengaue, driving a ChunFeng E-charm model scooter, was traveling west and “suddenly lost control and crashed.” No other vehicles were involved, said U Police Sgt. Garth Smith. He was transported to the University Medical Center.
Marissa Villasenor, a U public relations specialist, said she could not find Ofahengaue listed in the hospital’s records.
After U Police initially responded to the accident, the Salt Lake City Police Department later sent a reconstruction unit to investigate the circumstances. Police cars remained at the scene until after midnight with several squad cars in the vicinity.
“They will reconstruct the accident and work backwards to see where it started,” Garth said.
An hour previous to the scooter accident, U Police were in the area at Shoreline 825 responding to alleged smells of marijuana. A man in a red hat ran from the scene at the dorms when U Police arrived. Garth said the two cases are not related.
