I don’t know about you, but the transition from high school to college made me feel as if I might finally be “an adult” or something like that. However, as I’ve spent the last few years here I’ve learned that I still feel young, naive, and not old enough to enter the real world. With graduation impending, there are things that we all hear or read several times per day that we need to stop as we make this transition.
1. Like
It’s become a bad habit, but like, do we want to sound like we’re 15 in job interviews or work meetings? I think not.
2. But actually
Girls are the worst offenders of this one, myself included, but it actually needs to stop. What does it even mean? “But actually I don’t want to do that.” How about, “No, I’m okay without participating, thanks though!”
3. Exaggerating for no reason
“He called me like 846 times last night.” Did he really? He spent that much time trying to get a hold of you? Let’s tone it down, he called twice.
4. YOLO
ENOUGH. YOLO is not a word. It’s an acronym for something that we’ve all known since were were conscious enough to understand living. It certainly shouldn’t be said in a workplace setting, you’ll be looked at like you need help.
5. Oh my god.
While there are still tons of times when this is appropriate, let’s save it for actual OMG moments, not every time something minor-ly exciting happens.
6. Their, They’re & There
Guys. We’ve been working on this since we could talk. Why can’t a wide majority of people get this one down? It’s important to be able to email or write the right version of this word in a professional setting. If you don’t, what was the point in getting that super expensive piece of paper AKA your BA/BS?
7. Literally
Our “5 Annoying Things Girls Do” covered this one perfectly, but we have to throw it on this list. The fact that the improper overuse of the word “literally” changed the definition is a problem, don’t you think? Stop using it to replace figuratively, use it for literal actions only.
In summary, we’ve got some growing up to do, and probably always will. It is comforting to know that I’m not the only one who struggles with it.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
