Set against the unique backdrop of an abandoned theater-turned-rug-gallery, fashion and art came together for a truly unforgettable night at Art Meets Fashion’s Runway Show Saturday night. Adib’s Rug Gallery, which provided the space housing the event, featured multiple-level seating, an exceptionally lit ambiance and live drumming. The runway show started with a reception in the lobby where a DJ played some lively tunes while attendees enjoyed access to a bar and snacks.
After some time mingling, people were ushered into the main gallery space where the show was to take place. Heidi Gress, the producer of the event, took the stage and gave a speech about the new program that AMF is initiating. AMF wants to be a place where emerging designers can come to establish the branding and image that they want to have going forward.
Before the show began, three dancers surprised the audience with lively performances atop the rug piles scattered about the room. These incredible dancers performed a number of cultural dances that helped direct the crowd into the mood of the show.
The first runway show featured designs by Mary Rino, a designer known for her spectacular gowns, alongside other local designers. The event then presented a collection by Davis Hong. There were an array of neutral tones featured throughout the collection. The textures were also very apparent, and the collection was easily a crowd favorite.
The next collection to take the stage was “Redefining Man,” styled by Joseph Knoop. It featured clothing from Bastille, located downtown at the Gateway Mall. There were different categories within this show: sophisticated, redefining hipster and laid-back man. It was a cool show to see menswear style from one person’s point of view.
The last collection showcased the stateside debut of designer Kinabuti. Her collection featured neutral colors with pops of brighter colors throughout the mix. My favorite outfit from the collection was a knee-length dress with beautiful patterns and leather detailing. The model that wore the gown displayed the piece perfectly.
In between each show, the dancers returned to the stage to wow audiences and add an interesting and unique flavor to an already fabulous evening.
Overall the show brought a different idea of fashion to the Salt Lake area. It was very interesting to see budding designers being showcased in the Utah community. If you missed the show this year, head to the Art Meets Fashion’s website and check out what you missed. Be sure to attend next year and you’ll see how amazing the experience really was.
