[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]What if I told you there was an Indie-Rock group that’s almost all women, who sing in multiple languages, have played in America’s biggest music festivals and covers as their most popular songs?
That may seem like an unlikely combination, but that is the group known as Scala & Kolacny Brothers, a self-described ‘Indie-Rock Choir’ from Belgium. Now that’s something you don’t hear everyday.
I first discovered them in 2010 when I saw the trailer for the film, “The Social Network.” The trailer prominently features Scala’s rendition of Radiohead’s “Creep.” The first 48 seconds of the trailer is just pixelated images of Facebook, yet because of their voice, Scala makes this one of the most engaging trailers I’ve ever seen.
Intrigued, I immediately set out to discover who these voices were. Started in 1996, the choir is led by two brothers, Stijn and Steven Kolacny, who arrange, conduct and accompany the music. The star of the show though is the carousel of female singers who have comprised Scala over the years.
Scala has covered a wide variety of artists including Coldplay, Metallica, U2, The Police, The Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Kings of Leon and more.

Scala & Kolacny Brothers have released 8 albums to date, and have toured across Europe, Asia and America, even playing festivals like SXSW and Coachella. Not only do they sing covers of English rock songs, but they also sing in French and German. They’ve even made some original music videos for their covers, some of which are absolutely heartbreaking.
What I like most about Scala & Kolacny Brothers is their ability to strike a balance between their angelic voices and the dark gritty tone found in many of their covers. After a few melancholy and creepy songs, you begin to wonder if this seemingly young and innocent woman’s choir is actually a group of fallen angels, as tragic as they are beautiful.
