With such an over-saturated field of young, hip musicians trying to make it big, it’s easy to dismiss the efforts of a local indie band as unimaginative and boring. But one underground band that may just be the one to make it big comes from Salt Lake’s smaller and not-quite-as-cool neighbor, Provo. RKDN, self-described as “alt-pop,” just released their debut EP, “Stone Cold.”
The seven-track EP is more pop than alternative, but that’s only because of the electronic sounds and the heavy bass. The pop-like tendencies don’t come across as mindless, however, as many overplayed pop songs on the radio do. In fact, while their songs possess the qualities that can shoot them to fame, they have a very unique, smart sound.
Lead singer Matt Orr brings an extremely unique voice to their songs. While the overall sound might be something that appeals to most, the beats and rhythm of RKDN’s songs are, surprisingly, completely unique to them.
One of their songs, “Love Over Los Angeles” is about how much the band hates Los Angeles. Despite its disapproving look at such a popular city, it is incredibly catchy and easy to love. The addictive quality of their sound triumphantly comes across in “Silver,” which is impossible not to sing along to. The chorus is simple enough to have memorized after the first run through without compromising the meaning. Plus it’s available for free download on the band’s website, rkdnmusic.com.
The album is available to stream on their website and available for download on iTunes.
