With midterms on the way, it’s time to schedule in some tutoring.
Leslie Giles-Smith, program manager for the Learning Success Center on campus, said it’s not as intimidating as most students think.
“Some students are hesitant to get a tutor because they think that somehow that labels them as under-prepared, at-risk or remedial,” she said.
Instead, she suggests students look at tutors as tools, such as their laptops or smart-phones. Giles-Smith said it’s also important to find the right place to get help. At the U, students can go to the Learning Success Center, which includes ASUU Tutoring Services and offers a variety of instruction for all students and subjects. Locations are in the Marriott Library and the Heritage Center.
There’s also the Writing Center, which helps students with academic papers, and has facilities in both the Spencer Fox Eccles Business Building and the library.
Students can drop in to either facility for free, but for consistent one-on-one tutoring at the Learning Success Center, you need to pay a $7 hourly fee. This program served 536 students during the last academic year.
“Options are available in regard to times and locations,” Giles-Smith said.
The Writing Center helps students with grammar as well as résumés, poetry, blogs, personal statements and general papers. Madi Swenson, a junior in writing & rhetoric who works at the center, said the tutors come from a variety of backgrounds and majors.
“Remember that we are peers,” she said, “and that no one is a perfect writer — not even the tutors. We are here to develop better writers and not to shame or embarrass or perfect your writing.”
