Are you ready to get your geek on?
This week kicks off ASUU’s biannual Geek Week to prep students for finals. The Marriott Library will have extended hours until 3 a.m. and events will occur throughout the week.
Aubrey Keaney, a junior in anthropology and director of academic affairs for ASUU, said this event is held to encourage students to make smart studying decisions. This is why the library will not be open 24/7 as it has been in previous years.
“It’s not good to promote unhealthy study habits. We want to get people studying in healthy ways,” she said.
To accomplish this, Keaney partnered with the Center for Student Wellness and the Student Life Center to focus on stress management tactics. Polly Creveling, a junior in mechanical engineering and associate director of student affairs, said the Student Life Center will host free fitness classes during finals week.
On Friday evening, a canoe battleship competition will take place for students to relieve their stress while trying to sink others in the natatorium.
The wellness center will also provide something they have not before — condoms. Keaney asked her peers in a Facebook post what they would like for Geek Week and the public spoke. Keaney said it was a little “unusual,” but she is willing to give students what they ask for, as long as it stays in the budget.
This year, Keaney has cut the Geek Week budget almost in half, using only $1,600 of the $3,000 that is usually allocated. She hopes those student fees can be used for better things.
Of that money, $1,300 is going toward renting out the library’s parking lot, which will be free for students after 6 p.m.
The rest will go toward purchasing pizza, which ASUU will distribute at the Marriott Library Gould Auditorium every night this week from 7 p.m. until pizza runs out.
Creveling said this event is back by popular demand.
“A lot of students are so concerned about studying the whole time and don’t eat anything,” she said. “It makes people smile when you hand them a piece of pizza and they have been studying for 12 hours.”
Other week-long events include cuddling and playing with Intermountain Therapy Dogs, and free supplies and snacks at the Business Center. ASUU Childcare is also offering free child care services to anyone who signs up online and the library will have free printing.
“My goal this year has been to simplify things,” Keaney said. “It’s about creating a better campus climate — making sure everyone feels welcome and does well on their finals.”
