For the second consecutive year, Tom Hackett was given the Ray Gay Award for being the country’s best collegiate punter on Thursday. No other punter in the history of Utah or the Pac-12 has reached this achievement.
In addition to winning this award, he was also honored as a Walter Camp All-American first team member the same day.
This season, Hackett averaged 47.8 yards per punt, third in the country, and against Oregon he set a career-long of 76 yards. He also had one go for 74 yards against Michigan. After punting the ball a total of 55 times this season, the Australian was able to nail 43.6 precent of his punts within the 20-yard line, 11 of which fell within 10 yards, while two fell within five yards of the goal line.
Hackett is just the third two-time winner of this award, the other two being Ryan Allen of Louisiana Tech in 2011 and 2013, and Daniel Sepulveda of Baylor in 2004 and 2006.
