You’ve got an hour and a half until your next class. Before, you had to choose whether you wanted to go work out or study in the library. Now, you can do both.
Alfred Mowdood, a librarian liaison to the exercise and sports science department, suggested the Active Desk — a cycling machine and desk fused into one. The desk was developed by professor Jim Martin and Mowdood.
Ian Godfrey, facilities and operations director for the library, said they wanted to increase the health and wellness of students and staff and provide seating diversity.
The Active Desk had been moved to its current spot near the east entrance of the library due to increased usage.
“Part of the success of the desk is that it is set on a particular tension that provides aerobic benefit but it’s at a level that still allows you to focus on productivity,” Godfrey said.
Colby Judd, a sophomore in physics and economics, who uses the standing desks on a regular basis said, “I’m much more productive [when using the desks] and they keep me awake.”
Additionally, the library also included desks with adjustable heights and the recent “Spun Chairs” located on level one. The new, oddly-shaped red chairs were added to provide extra seating for students in the booths.
