Sometimes staying close to home for Spring Break can be a relaxing change of pace. If you plan on sticking close to Salt Lake City but still want to switch up your daily routine with a day trip or weekend getaway, check out the town of Midway.
Tucked away in the Wasatch Mountains, Midway is only a 45-minute drive from Salt Lake City. It’s a cheaper and less crowded getaway than Park City, in addition to having that small-town charm. From the Crater at the Homestead resort to the hikes and unique local shops, this is the perfect close-to-home getaway you’ve been looking for.
There are plenty of trails winding in and around the town, with a hike for every skill level. Although there is still snow on the ground in many of these areas, the trails should be packed down or melted enough for most. Take a short drive down the road in any direction, and there is surely a spot to go out and explore.
If you want to try out a truly unique activity in the area, then head over to the Homestead Resort. This historic getaway is complete with various amenities open to the public, the most interesting of which is the Homestead Caldera, known by locals as “the crater.”
The crater is a deep natural hot spring beneath a rock dome. Anybody can pay to spend some time relaxing in the warm mineral waters in the cave-like area, the only opening to which is a hole above and the tunnel leading to the outside. The crater is unique in its depth, drawing scuba divers and swimmers alike. One can even gain their scuba certification at the crater. It’s open seven days a week, so check out the website for pricing and hours.
If you want to keep things relaxing, take a walk around main street Midway and the surrounding neighborhoods. There are many old houses and buildings dotting the town that house some unique shops. One worth stepping into is called “All That Stuff In the Barn.”
The store is housed in a old barn and is located not far from main street Midway. The store sells home decor and gifts, claiming that it is “Not your everyday barn!”
Staying home during the break does not have to be boring — heading out of the valley and into the mountains can be a vacation in its own right. Take a drive up to Midway, spend a day, a night or a weekend, and experience the unique beauty tucked away in the mountains.
