The fourth of July is just as much about independence as it as about fireworks displays.
Fireworks are a tradition first advocated by John Adams in a letter to his wife in which he wrote that the signing of the Declaration of Independence should be a “great anniversary Festival” and “solemnized with Pomp and Parade… Bonfires and Illuminations…” In 1777, Congress officially ordained the tradition and it grew from there. Many have even come to associate fireworks with the famous line from the Star-Spangled Banner: ‘And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air…’
Whatever the reason, whether it be as noble as the birth of a new nation or something related more to some past pyrotechnically-inclined political figure’s entertainment, fireworks provide a certain excitement you can’t find anywhere else. They’re like stars, but bigger, louder and much more colorful.
Utah has many lovely fireworks displays that take place in the days leading up to and on July fourth. Below is a list of some, all located within an hour’s drive from Salt Lake City. They are listed first according to date and then according to proximity to SLC. You’re welcome.
