Walking through campus, it’s easy to notice a somewhat unique style in the clothing of the other students around you. To advertise this particular brand, the Chronicle’s new College Street Style series will feature a new student, and with them a new outfit, each week. You’ll be able to learn what students are wearing, what they recommend for others and even where they get their clothing inspiration.
First up to start off this new style series are the lovely freshmen/friend duo, Emily Nachtweih and Taylor Lenci. They may be new to the U campus, but they know a thing or two about how to recreate their own style while referencing a certain U style as well. Both from the bay area, Nachtweih is undeclared and Lenci is majoring in Education.
As-Seen-On
On the day I spoke with her, Emily Nachtweih was featuring A Forever 21 boho tank, lightwash jeans from JCPenney and Rainbow sandals to complete the look.
Taylor Lenci’s bralette, a Free People find, were paired with Lululemon leggings.
Shopping Tips
The friends regularly shop at JCPenney, Forever 21, Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters and Lululemon. Emily Nachtweih mentioned that JCPenney in particular had some awesome finds.
They both placed Lululemon leggings as their favorite clothing item to wear, saying it was the clothing item they were also willing to spend the most money on. Those leggings don’t come cheap and can range from anything near $80 to $150, but both said that they last a long time and are definitely worth it.
“[They’re] really comfortable, highly recommend; and they’re not see-through,” said Taylor Lenci. Any legging-buyer knows that when buying leggings thickness is a major deciding factor; these appear to be the ones to wear.
Asked what style piece they wouldn’t leave the house without, Emily Nachtweih answered the Rainbow sandals, with Taylor Lenci quick to agree. “[The sandals are] neutral colored so you can wear them with anything,” Taylor Lenci explained. They’re a big trend from California, somewhat equivalent to the popularity of chacos at the U.
Inspiration
Their style inspiration comes mainly through their friends. Lenci explained it also comes from where she is; her style is a bit different in California than it is here in Utah where the emphasis is more on the outdoors. “I go with what’s around me because I don’t want to stand out too much but just enough,” Lenci said.
Additionally, she is careful to acknowledge that though some clothing items may look good on other people, that doesn’t always mean the item will be for her. This stays true with popular trends—both ladies only apply trends to their wardrobes if they like them.
Recommendations
These ladies recommend that other students focus on wearing clothing that is both comfortable and works with the weather. “[Wear] clothes that you’re willing to wear all around campus…it can be exhausting, it’s good to have comfortable clothes,” said Nachtweih. Take Lenci’s regret as guidance on what not to wear in the heat—one day she said she wore a long black t-shirt when it was nearly 95 degrees outside and she was dying!
Nachtweih said, “I feel more confident when I’m wearing something that I feel is flattering…you can leave a better impression on someone if you’re wearing something that looks nice and if you’re dressing appropriately.” Most importantly, “If you dress nice it shows that you care about your appearance.”
When it comes to campus style, these girls say go with what makes you comfortable. Hope you enjoyed the first style series—there will be more to come.
