As the demand for college graduates increases, so does the competition between former students as they pursue their dream jobs.
In order to provide students with unique qualifications, the David Eccles School of Business is teaming up with University of Utah Health Sciences to launch a program that isn’t offered anywhere else. The program, called BioVenture, is geared toward students who aspire to go into business in the health care field. BioVenture intends to not only teach students the ins-and-outs of business, but also requires students to take some medical pre-requisites, a skill that employers don’t typically find in resumes. The U hopes the program will equip students with the expertise to handle situations that aren’t discussed in most business classes.
BioVenture bridges the medical and commercial aspects of health care. With this one-of-a-kind program, students will gain hands-on knowledge, skills and training in business and health care. The program is built so that students gain a deeper understanding and develop greater appreciation for medical ethics.
Student Lourdes Peralta said that they believe its important for students to have knowledge in multiple subjects. “Being in the healthcare field is more than just learning about what’s in your field education wise, but also the interactions you will have with your patients,” Peralta said.
Students will participate in case study analysis and attend seminars from leaders in the bio-design field. Problem-solving in ethical issues is taught from both business and medical perspectives. The program will provide students with clinical shadowing opportunities to gain real-world experience. BioVenture will be built on interaction between students, instructors and professionals.
Sue Johnson, a spokesperson for the school of business, said “Students will benefit and learn from each other.”
The program launches in Spring 2017 and will run for two semesters. Classes will be taught every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. BioVentures I, offered in Spring semester, will focus on the early stages of product development in healthcare and business. The second class, BioVentures II, will focus on the later stages of product development and will be offered during Summer semester.
