Although Election Day has passed and polls across the nation have closed, election season may not be over so quickly. Many races have been called across the state, but some, like the high-profile Ben McAdams and Mia Love race for the U.S. House seat in Utah’s 4th Congressional District is still up in the air as of Nov. 13.
In Salt Lake County, turnout spiked since the 2014 mid-term elections. There were 517,444 registered voters, 2,430 of which were in precincts SLC045 and SLC080, encompassing most of the dorms on the University of Utah campus. Across the county, 63.74 percent of registered voters actually cast ballots, and in the University of Utah precincts, 56.16 percent did in 080 and 33.39 percent in 045. In the 2014 midterms, Salt Lake County had 440,524 registered voters, of which only 52.07 percent voted. This high turnout was predicted, and the U hosted a voting center on campus for the first mid-term election ever.
Students across the U’s campus are registered in various districts in Utah, not just the 2nd Congressional District, where the U is located. Many live in the 4th Congressional District, where McAdams and Love are vying for a seat, the results of which are awaited for nationwide.
“There is a reason why people across the country are watching this race,” said Jason Perry, director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the U. “The results will come down to the wire, and could even tip the balance of the House. This race has demonstrated that no candidate, even a Republican, has an easy go of things in the Fourth Congressional District. This race has been especially interesting and difficult to predict with the number of new, unaffiliated voters.”
Many of these new voters, either in this election or in recent years, were students at the U. Students did not just vote, though — they also got directly involved in campaigns. Nick Cockrell, a junior majoring in history and political science, worked as a field director for Suzanne Harrison’s state legislature campaign.
“I have never managed a campaign before — I had no idea what I was getting myself into. But, did know that I wanted change, and I was determined to fight for it,” Cockrell said. “This experience was unlike anything I’ve ever done before. I got to work with other great university students from around the state who lent their time to our campaign to contact the more than 20,000 voters in Suzanne’s district. We fought as hard as we could, and it paid off. Suzanne won her race by a large margin. I think these elections indicate that Utah is changing — and young people have a lot to do with it.”
Nikita Valdez, a senior majoring in political science, worked on the McAdams campaign staff.
“I grew up in the CD4, so being able to work for a campaign in my parents’ neighborhood was a fun prospect,” Valdez said. “To have one of my elected officials actually represent my views was something I didn’t think I would get living in Utah. I voted because it’s something my parents always taught me was important.”
All seats in the U.S. House of Representatives were on the ballot, including Republican incumbents Rob Bishop in CD1, Chris Stewart in CD2, John Curtis in CD3 and Mia Love in CD4. Reps. Bishop, Stewart and Curtis retained their seats, though the ballots for Love’s district are still being counted.
One U.S. Senate seat, previously held by Republican Orrin Hatch, was up for election. Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney beat Democrat Jenny Wilson. State and local positions were also put to voters, from county clerks and school board members to state legislators. The state was also asked to consider one non-binding question, three propositions and three constitutional amendments. Republicans maintained a majority in the Utah State Legislature. Democrats made headway in multiple elections, including flipping a few State Legislature seats.
