Utah Tennis Teams Start Spring Schedules
January 16, 2020
The University of Utah men’s and women’s tennis teams are starting up their spring schedule this week. The men’s team will be home in the George S. Eccles Tennis Center to take on Idaho and Weber State on Thursday. While the women’s team will be in Missoula to face the Montana Griz on Friday, then Minnesota on Sunday.
While the men’s team hasn’t competed since early November when they went to the LMU Invitational, the women’s team was able to get started last weekend when they faced SUU at home. The women took both matches from the Thunderbirds on Saturday, Jan. 11, going 7-0 and 5-0.
Men’s tennis will first take on the University of Idaho Vandals 12 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams haven’t matched up since 2009, but the Utes always come out victorious with a 3-0 record against the Vandals since 2000. They previously played in 2005-06 and 2000-01. The last time the two teams faced it was a 4-3 win for the Utes, but both programs have changed immensely in the last 11 years, so this will make for a great first match for our men’s team. Idaho will head to USU after to take on the Aggies the following Saturday.
The Ute’s next matchup against Weber State will be on the same day at 5 p.m. Utah and Weber have met up for the last two years, where the Utes have taken both matches. The first match in 2018 was 5-2 and in 2019 it was 6-1. Weber got an earlier start to their spring season as they played Grand Canyon University last weekend and won 5-2.
Women’s tennis will have two matches versus the Montana Griz on Friday before taking on Minnesota on Sunday. Utah and Montana haven’t faced since 2014, but the Utes have beat Montana on every occasion with a 4-0 record, winning by 7-0 every single time. They will play in Montana in Peak Racquet Club in a doubleheader starting at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Montana will then take on Minnesota the next day at 9 a.m. before the Utes take on the Gophers on Sunday at the same time. Minnesota and Utah have faced each other the last two years, in 2018 and 2019, both times the score was 4-3 with the Utes taking the win. Both matches will be close ones but with the previous records, it’s looking like it could be a winning weekend for the women’s tennis team.
All are invited to attend to the men’s matches at home this Thursday while the women’s matches won’t be broadcasted for the public to see.
