It is no secret that Utah has a distinct style. Having gone viral on TikTok for the ultra-baggy “Utah boy jeans” and one-of-a-kind “Utah girl curls,” the state is known for its unique looks and myriad of trend followers. The University of Utah is no exception to this idea. New trends and fall fashion are seen as students assemble back together and the weather cools down.
The Trends Defining Campus Style
Many recent fashion trends, such as low-rise jeans or overalls, have made a nostalgic return — leopard print being the latest exhibit. Celebrities such as Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner have incorporated the print into their street styles through bandanas and bodycon dresses. The animal print fad has made its way to the U campus. The print, seen in mini skirts, tennis shoes and more, is the perfect way to stand out amongst the crowd.
Pops of red outfits have been dominating the fashion scene on campus. This trend is perfect for our school colors — go Utes!
Madi Sidoti, an architecture and business major at the U, discussed the trend.
“I love a red accent piece,” Sidoti said. “Either through a cute pair of red sneakers, a red bow or a red cardigan. I think a pop of red elevates a neutral fit.”
The jeans and flip-flop combination is a current trend on campus, receiving mixed reviews. However, the unusual union of the pieces is a common sight. The outfit, which appears to fit the current weather on campus, is subtle but makes a name for itself in the trend history books. Only time, or the cold weather, will tell how long the trend will stay relevant.
“Falling” Into the New Season’s Fashion Scene
The days are getting chillier and in return, the fashion on campus is evolving with it. Fall weather is perfect for mixing and matching sweaters and skirts or t-shirts and jeans. These versatile pieces, which can be worn in both summer and winter fashion, work for the brisk mornings and the snug afternoons that fall tends to bring.
Fall essentials are crucial to completing a wardrobe. These staples, including warm fleeces, knit sweaters, neutral vests and classic crewnecks, are perfect for diving into the new season. And never underestimate the power of a cute button-down styled with jeans or a skirt and stylish tennis shoes. Who knows — maybe the tennis shoes will be a pair of the trendy Adidas Gazelles in a lively color.
A go-to fall outfit for health and kinesiology major Kylee Robbins is Boston clogs tied together with Levi’s low-pros and a fun hoodie. The simple yet adorable outfit will match the weather and campus look book. And when in doubt, a graphic tee and a pair of timeless denim jeans are sure to turn heads. Having basics in your closet will save you time and money when choosing outfits. Plus, you won’t have to worry about falling victim to quite as many micro-trends.
Keeping Up and Planning Ahead
There is no way of knowing what next season’s trends will be. Still, it never hurts to take fashion tips from peers and friends while wearing what you love. The U’s style is constantly evolving. Having a wardrobe full of essentials will leave you with a versatile range of outfits ideal for any season — perfect for being in a state with all four seasons. And who knows, maybe Utah will go viral again for our unique trends this fall.
