On Oct. 28, Monday morning, Tyler, The Creator dropped his sixth album, “CHROMAKOPIA,” including 14 tracks.
The album shows its separation from Tyler’s previous album, “Call Me If You Got Lost,” by its drill sergeant aesthetic presented by Tyler through the music, music video visuals and stage performance.
Easter Eggs And Anticipation
A promotional video released by Tyler on Oct. 16 informed fans of the upcoming album release. The video titled, “ST CHROMA” shows a line of hidden figures marching in a row, seeming to be led by Tyler himself.
Fans speculated that these people marching were possible collaborations on the album such as Frank Ocean, Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar. Although those were not quite the collaborations that were featured on the album, there are some exciting names included such as Sexyy Red, Childish Gambino and Daniel Caesar.
On the eve of album release day, Tyler hosted an album listening party at Los Angeles’s Intuit Dome. He let the album play while marching on stage in a military-like fashion for a number of fans and celebrities in attendance including Kendall Jenner, Steve Lacy and Kim Kardashian.
Track-list Talk
The album begins with “St. Chroma,” featuring Daniel Caesar, and perfectly introduces this new era to fans. “Rah Tah Tah,” and “Noid,” tracks two and three follow as seamless rap tracks.
A track that is causing confusion and speculation amongst fans is track five, “Hey Jane.” The song is split into two verses, the first from what seems to be Tyler’s perspective to Jane, and the second verse vice versa.
In the first verse Tyler says, “And you don’t know all of me, how am I to live with? That is not a good foundation to have kids with.” This song has led fans to wonder if Tyler has a secret child or what the reasoning is behind his theme of parenthood on the album.
Track six, “I Killed You,” presents a new sound for Tyler by beginning the track with a classic acoustic guitar, followed by bongos.
A personal favorite of mine is track seven, “Judge Judy,” featuring Childish Gambino, because the beats remind me of “Call Me If You Get Lost.”
Probably the most notable song on the album is, “Sticky,” featuring Sexyy Red, GloRilla and Lil Wayne. Its classic hip hop beats and powerful verses delivered by these features make it a competitor for the best track on the album.
The 14 track long album comes to a close with, “I Hope You Find Your Way Home,” and Tyler softly chanting “Chromakopia.”
