Halloween is one of the coolest holidays. People can dress up and pretend to be someone they’re not and for a moment live in a world that’s not their own. With October dedicated to themed festivities, here are some of the best films for your Halloween movie nights.
Familiar Favorites
“Halloweentown” is a cute, lighthearted childhood classic. When Marnie turns 13, she gets the birthday surprise of her life when she learns she comes from a long line of witches. Following her grandma home to Halloweentown, she discovers the peaceful world of the supernatural. When dark forces threaten that peace, Marnie finds herself thrown into a battle to save this world and learn about her family history.
“Beetlejuice” is another fun, lighthearted favorite. The movie follows Lydia and her family as they deal with an annoying spirit and a dead couple trying to chase them out of their new home. With the sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” having just been released and just as fun as the original, this is the perfect October rewatch.
“The Haunted Mansion” is the perfect supernatural comedy. When a family vacations to Gracey Manor, they find themselves in the middle of a century-long quest to reunite lost lovers. Trapped in the center, they must find a way to escape the ghosts inhabiting the haunted mansion.
The Classics
“Hocus Pocus” is the ultimate Halloween classic. Set in Salem, Los Angeles native Max is skeptical of the superstitious beliefs of the townspeople. Trying to impress his high school crush, he accidentally releases the Sanderson sister witches from their 300-year-old trap. Following the fabulous Sanderson sisters as they wreak havoc on the town, Max and his friends try to fix his mistake. This movie is a must-watch during October.
The Addams Family is the classic story of an eccentric family and their shenanigans. Most remember the 1991 portrayal with the stunningly regal Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams. However, the 1964 tv show is also beloved. The reimagined, more family-friendly cartoon version from 2019 reached a whole new audience of family members. While not Halloween-centered, Netflix’s spinoff series “Wednesday” is also a must-watch for fans of the family.
“Ghostbusters” is another supernatural comedy that follows three best friends chasing ghosts and ghouls wreaking havoc on New York City. This classic film is lighthearted, fun and full of adventure.
Of course, you can’t talk about Halloween movies without mentioning the classic stories of Dracula and Frankenstein, the original monsters lurking in the dark. With so many movies dedicated to these characters, there’s a reimagination for everyone to enjoy.
Horror Nights
“Trick ‘r Treat” is a creative thriller that weaves together five stories, keeping you on the edge of your seat.
“Scream” is a well-developed franchise of Halloween slashers. With six films out and a seventh in the works, this series will keep you hooked for a week.
“Halloween” is a bone-chilling slasher with an open ending that will keep you looking behind your back for days.
Of course, there are plenty more to watch, enough for every day of the month, but you have to wrap up your Halloween month with the beloved classic “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” This Tim Burton film perfectly transitions from the horror-filled festivities into the cozier holidays.
