Music enthusiasts are counting down the days until the 2025 Grammy nomination announcements, set to be released on Nov. 8, 2024. The competition is fierce, with releases from Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and more. The awards will surely be a bloodbath. Here are my thoughts on who will receive nominations in the big three categories.
Album of the Year
With returning winners Eilish and Swift, and the addition of artists like Charli xcx, Ariana Grande and Beyoncé, the 2025 Album of the Year category is shaping up to be highly competitive.
Eilish, a nine-time Grammy award winner, released her newest album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” on May 17, 2024. The album, which includes notable tracks such as “Lunch,” “Birds of a Feather” and “Wildflower,” received much praise. There is no doubt that Eilish’s new album will earn one of the eight nominations for this year’s award show.
Swift’s 31-track album, “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology,” is a top competitor for “Hit Me Hard and Soft.” Written by music masterminds Swift, Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff, the album is enthralling from beginning to end.
Grande can sing and shows this in her new album, “Eternal Sunshine.” It seems the album will be nominated, but can it compete with Eilish’s and Swift’s albums to take home the trophy? Many music enthusiasts, including myself, are not sure.
Those three albums are not the only ones competing for a nomination and a win; this year was one for the history books of music. The summer was full of “Espresso“ and “Club Classics,” making Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet“ and Charli xcx’s “Brat“ potential albums for nominations. However, with many more groundbreaking albums, it will be a battle for one of the eight spots.
Song of the Year
With social media more significant than ever, artists have been fortunate to have their songs shared millions of times on various platforms, helping them reach new listeners. The social media reach also means more competition for Song of the Year.
Fans can expect that the same artist will receive nominations for multiple categories. Swift and Carpenter are two artists who will most likely receive numerous nominations. The first track on Swift’s new album, “Fortnight (feat Post Malone),” will likely be a frontrunner for the award, with a song of the summer, “Espresso” by Carpenter, neck-and-neck.
Rising pop star Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” will undoubtedly receive a nomination for the 2024 Song of the Year. The tune took the internet by storm, drew in a large audience and led to live performances worldwide, including at the 2024 Video Music Awards.
Other potential nominations include Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em,” Kendrick Lamar‘s “Not Like Us,” Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe” and Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love).” The competition in the category will be close.
Best New Artist
It has been quite the year for pop princess Carpenter. Carpenter is currently touring for “Short n’ Sweet.” Before that, she was opening for a leg of Swift’s Eras Tour. While she has been singing since 2009, the star recently rose to fame this last year, making a nomination for 2025 Best New Artist likely.
Boone and Roan, who both had successful years within the industry, are also top contenders for Best New Artist. Boone, a previous “American Idol” contestant and viral TikTok star, has had a remarkable musical year and will surely receive a nomination.
Roan, known for her hit songs “Good Luck, Babe” and “HOT TO GO,” rose to fame last year and can almost guarantee a nomination and possibly a win. Teddy Swims, Sexyy Red, Megan Moroney and Shaboozey may also receive nominations for Best New Artist. However, just like the other categories, winning will be hard-earned. The nominations will be released shortly, and music fans everywhere will eagerly tune in to see if their favorite artists made the cut.
