Sunday night was an electrifying one for the Lady Utes as they had a huge 72-53 win against the Montana State Bobcats. The win was a great way to keep the momentum going under new head coach Gavin Petersen. With this win, the Lady Utes are now 5-1.
First Half
To start the game, Gianna Kneepkens took first point honors with a 3-pointer to begin the game, assisted by Inês Vieira. After some play, Vieira made a quick fastbreak layup, before Kneepkens got her second basket of the night. Afterwards, the Utes managed to get into more of a rhythm, with several points in the paint. The Utes got up 19-12 to lead into the second quarter.
To start the quarter off, Kneepkens made her second three, assisted by Jenna Johnson. After a quick three minutes, Johnson secured a layup, before a quick score from Reese Ross. Kneepkens picked up another 3-pointer to get the Utes to 32-20.
Second Half
To get the next quarter going, Kennady McQueen drained the next two shots. Soon after, the Utes picked up quick back-to-back layups to gain more momentum. The Utes played the clock with their favor, taking more time with each play. The Utes then gained a couple more points off of free throws. To end the quarter, Kneepkens hit another jumper, to get the Utes up 42-37 by the end of the quarter.
The Utes in the fourth quarter knew they had to keep the momentum up to secure the game. Kneepkens continued her scoring to get a quick layup to start the Utes off in scoring. Mayé Touré picked up a layup soon after as well, before Vieria did the same. There was not too much action afterwards, handing the Utes a great 72-53 win. Vieria also capped off her 400th assist, marking an impressive milestone for her career.
Next Up
The Utes will now head to the Caribbean and take part in the Cayman Island Classic from Nov. 28-30. The team will take on Mississippi State and Notre Dame for their matchups, which can be viewed on FloCollege.
