The No. 5 Red Rocks scored a 197.950 to take first place at the Les Olson IT Best of Utah meet Monday night at the Maverik Center in West Valley. The Red Rocks tied Oklahoma for the highest score in the nation this season, which was set back on Jan. 11 at the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad.
“What a fantastic night. I think one of the highlights was seeing our team complete four events — just do a complete meet,” head coach Carly Dockendorf said. “We haven’t done that yet. I loved their composure all night. I thought they stayed confident and relaxed, but really focused.”
The Red Rocks opened the Best of Utah meet on the bars and put up a dominant score of 49.525. Makenna Smith scored the first of five separate 9.900 scores for Utah. Ana Padurariu started a string of four consecutive scores over 9.900, followed by Ashley Glynn and Amelie Morgan before Grace McCallum continued to put up big numbers on the bars with a 9.925. After the first rotation the Red Rocks led the meet with 49.525, over second place BYU with a 49.025.
Utah continued to dominate on the scoreboard, putting up two consecutuve 49.525 scores on the beam. Camie Winger delivered the first 9.900 for the Red Rocks on the beam, but would not be the last – Smith executed a near flawless routine to score a 9.950 which would lead the meet, followed by a 9.925 Morgan score, and a McCallum 9.900. The Red Rocks led the meet with a score of 99.050, over second place Southern Utah’s 98.150 after the second rotation.
The third rotation saw the Red Rocks once again score a 49.525, before the team scored four of the highest scores on the floor routine through three rotations. Smith and Winger both opened the scoring with 9.925 for Utah, with Glynn following with a 9.900 of her own and McCallum adding the third 9.925 score of the night. Utah led the meet 148.575 over Utah State’s 146.950 after the third rotation.
For the fourth and final rotation, the Red Rocks scored a 49.375 on the vault. Ella Zirbes opened the scoring with a 9.875, and Smith continued her dominant scoring with a 9.950 on the vault to give her a meet leading all-around score of 39.725. McCallum came in second with an all-around score of 39.600, and Winger third with a score of 39.475. The Red Rocks secured first place overall, leading 197.950 over second place Utah State in the Best of Utah meet.
The Red Rocks will make their first trip to Provo to face BYU this upcoming Friday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. MT
