The first episode of the third season of “Invincible” was released on Feb. 6, 2025 with the last episode coming out March 13. It was created by Robert Kirkman and produced by Skybound Entertainment.
Back In action
The third season of “Invincible” continues to follow Mark (Steven Yeun) and the ever present struggle of balancing his super hero life with his normal life. This time, however, he also has a growing relationship with his fellow superhero Eve (Gillian Jacobs) while Oliver (Christian Convery), his half-brother, makes things difficult due to his enthusiasm about finally getting his powers and his unnerving sense of justice.
For the most part, this season sees Mark on his own he officially cuts ties with Cecil (Walton Goggins) after two seasons of a partnership that was strained from the get-go. The main focus of this season is the question: is it right to kill people in order to save more lives? Mark grapples with this concept in nearly every episode, and making matters worse for him is the fact that he’s being watched by an old foe.
Ups And Downs
As usual, “Invincible” is a fantastic time with compelling characters and extreme violence. This season lives up to that. The characters remain as engaging as ever, no doubt in part to the knockout cast of voice actors. Compared to the other seasons, the third focuses more on standalone episodes. While they thematically connect from a plot standpoint, they are just a series of isolated events that have little to do with one another.
Despite that, the show does well to keep the audience engaged with the moral struggle Mark is going through. With that in mind, a few things do stand out as being below average. The first one is that when the main cast isn’t on the screen, things can feel meandering. The best example of this would be the Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas) and Shrinking Rae (Grey Griffin) romance sub-plot that feels forced and stale. The other unfortunate aspect is how obvious it is that the show runners need to stretch out the budget.
Most of the animation in the episodes is passable, but there is a heavy dip in quality for episode five, “This Was Supposed To Be Easy.” On the other hand, the last three episodes boast some of the best animation the series has ever seen. While unfortunate that they have to stretch out the budget, creators know what to prioritize seeing as those last three episodes contain some of the most beloved moments from the comic, including the arrival of a certain fan favorite character in the last episode, who is voiced by the acclaimed Jeffrey Dean Morgan. With a chilling performance and stellar animation, he absolutely dominates the finale and reminds everyone that moments like this is why they watch “Invincible.”
Closing Thoughts
The third season of “Invincible” has some low points, but the high points outweigh it by far. The slow descent of Mark’s morality is engaging to watch even if most of the things surrounding that conflict tend to drag it down. Fans will enjoy it, and given what comes next in the story they’ll definitely stick around to see what comes next. “Invincible” can be watched on Amazon Prime.
