Tailbacks focal point of new offense

The U football team has traditionally been known for its running game, a fact that, despite the installation of a more spread out, quarterback-centered offense, probably won't change too much this season. By all accounts, the best two football players on the U offense are tailbacks Marty Johnson and Brandon Warfield, both of whom are capable of starting for quite a few Division I teams.

The Chronicle’s View: New tuition policy could prove to be a bureaucratic nightmare

At midnight on Sept. 5, students who have not paid their tuition will be automatically removed from their classes. The policy regarding the payment of tuition is new to the U this year and has been implemented to coerce students into paying their tuition in full and in a timely manner.

Prof finds possible cure for cancer in AIDS gene

Associate Professor of Pathology Vicente Planelles has discovered how a gene in the AIDS virus may lead to a cure for cancer. Planelles learned the AIDS gene "vpr" causes white blood cells to stop dividing and multiplying. This leads to a weakened immune system-leaving AIDS patients susceptible to deadly infections.

I was livid. Editors tore into my column and replaced my Native Americans with American Indians and turned a Brazilian into a Hispanic. Journalistic style be damned, I prefer Native American to American Indian. The latter lends credence to the ill-informed imperialism that bullied its way across the American continents.

Research confirms bomb radiation

Tore Straume, U professor of radiobiology in the U School of Medicine, led a team of scientists from the United States and Germany to end a 20-year controversy over the amount of radiation exposure in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. According to Straume, the radiation readings from those cities serve as the world's primary basis for estimating radiation induced cancer risk in humans.

Students attempt Capitol designs

Last Wednesday kicked off the weeklong architectural contest among the students of the Graduate School of Architecture. The Capitol Building is redesigning its grounds and architecture graduate students have the opportunity to submit ideas for the design of the new monument that will be built next spring.
