New Web Site Gets Mixed Reactions From Students

With a fresh U home page for the new year, students like senior Jayson Nelson says it is easier than ever to access his grades and schedules. "It's much better looking with the pictures, and I also like how they incorporated the fast grades and fast schedule on the Campus Information Systems page, as well," said Nelson, a business major.

Domek Named Rhodes Scholar

The U's Gretchen Domek was one of 32 students nationwide named Rhodes Scholar in early December. Though her award is one for individual achievement, Gretchen Domek credits it to the education she has received at the U. Domek will begin her studies at Oxford University in England this October, where she hopes to create a course study on medical ethics by drawing on the university's physiology, psychology and medical anthropology programs.

Architecture Students Unveil Plans

Architecture students tackled a 170,000-square-foot project: proposing designs for the new Utah Natural History Museum. The first-year graduate students presented their class projects to Professor Kendra Shank Smith who, each semester, asks her students to come up with innovative new designs for local buildings.

The University of Utah Police Department's Web site reported 40 counts of burglary or theft on campus in December 2002. The UUPD includes a staff of 31 police officers and 60 security guards staffed 24 hours a day. They are dedicated to promoting a safe environment on campus, including protecting people from crime.

ASUU to Renovate Cork Room for Student Groups

Students groups on campus may have an official place to meet, relax and work in the Union as soon as next fall. The Union Director and the Associated Students of the University of Utah's Executive Office are estimating the costs of remodeling the Union's Cork Room for storage space, conference rooms and work areas.
