Supreme Court Case Overturns Sentences

WASHINGTON?Juries, not judges, must make the crucial decisions that determine whether a convicted killer lives or dies, the Supreme Court ruled Monday, a finding that could overturn scores of death sentences nationwide. The ruling capped a court term that death penalty opponents called the most promising in a quarter-century.

Polygamist Hears Guilty Sentence

NEPHI?Polygamist Tom Green was convicted of child rape Monday for impregnating one of his wives-to-be when she was 13. District Judge Donald Eyre took just 30 minutes to find Green guilty for his relationship with Linda Kunz, who is now his wife. The trial lasted about an hour.

Church Bus Crash Kills 5, Injures 30

TERRELL, Texas?A chartered bus taking youngsters to a church camp crashed into the concrete pillar of an overpass Monday, killing the driver and four passengers, authorities said. At least 36 other people were injured in the accident about 30 miles east of Dallas.

Convict Suspicious In Kidnapper Case

SALT LAKE CITY?A handyman who worked at the home of 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart has been arrested for an alleged parole violation and is at the top of the list of potential suspects in her disappearance, police said earlier this week. Richard Albert Ricci, who has a 29-ayear criminal record, was questioned by police the day after the girl's apparent abduction and was among those re-interviewed because he did painting and yard work at the home.

The Salt Lake Organizing Committee hands the U a $7.9 million check. The money will go toward the bonds taken out to renovate Rice-Eccles Stadium. The stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, as well as the Olympic flame.

Session Could End in More Budget Cuts

In a Special Session Wednesday June 26, the Legislature will have to cut $173 million from the state budget and decide how much of that, if any, must come from higher education. U administrators have previously said that if the U is asked to make cuts beyond the $11 million slash made earlier this year, they would institute a mid-year tuition increase for Fall Semester and specific programs would be cut drastically, possibly to the point of laying off faculty.

SALT LAKE CITY?Police investigating the disappearance of 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart said Tuesday that contrary to what they reported earlier, the kidnapper did not threaten the girl's little sister. Two weeks ago, Elizabeth was reported taken by gunpoint from the bed shared by the two girls.
