The Chronicle’s View: Religious Studies an Educational Asset

April 23, 2002
Religious studies belong in the U's curriculum. If we have programs that explore the intimacies of ethnic and gender identity, why not religion? It's not as if some courses on religion do not already exist at the U. But they are scattered throughout departments and are often taught by professors with only a side interest, not a formal education, in religious studies.

Five More Utes Join NFL Ranks

April 23, 2002
They weren't among the 261 athletes selected in last weekend's NFL Draft, but that hasn't necessarily ended the professional aspirations of five U football players. While teammates Cliff Russell and Ed Ta'amu were chosen in the third and fourth rounds, respectively, fellow Utes Dameon Hunter, Doug Kaufusi, Ma'ake Kemoeatu, Yohance Scott and Adam Tate have all gone the rookie free agent route.

Players Need Role Models, Too

April 23, 2002
Charles Barkley can pontificate until the end of the earth?or until he can look at his toes without his gut obscuring the view, whichever comes first?that sports figures are not and should not be role models, and it won't change the reality that, for right or wrong, youngsters do and always will look up to them.

Loses to UNLV Do Damage to Baseball

April 23, 2002
The U baseball team probably had its best chance of the season to overtake BYU for the second spot in the Mountain West Conference this past weekend, but it could not pull out the series against UNLV. The Utes were only able to win the second game behind the arm of Mitch Maio, but the other two games showed how much the Utes love playing when Maio is on the mound, as UNLV scored 7 runs in each of the other games to take the series.

Cross Country’s Jameson Earns Academic Honor

April 23, 2002
Teren Jameson, the U's star performer on both the cross country and track teams, has been named a 2001 Academic All-American. The senior not only earned All-America status in cross country for the second consecutive year with his 38th-place finish in last fall's NCAA Championships (running the 10K in 30 minutes, 10 seconds), he boasted an even more impressive performance in the classroom, as the electrical engineering major carries a 3.

Club Water Polo Team is Ready for Nationals

April 23, 2002
In the world of professional sports, the idea of an expansion team competing for a championship in its second year of existence would be absurd. The realm of collegiate club sports, however, is quite another thing. Just ask the U's women's water polo team.

Conservation Efforts Improve on Campus

April 23, 2002
With more than 800 acres of green space on campus, the U is known to be one of the heaviest water users in the state. In the past four years, U grounds crews have cut water use by 40 percent, but critics say there is still more room for conservation. The state as a whole is in its fourth consecutive year of drought.

April 23, 2002
NEPHI?Prosecutors want a free-lance writer to testify against polygamist Tom Green as part of the state's attempt to prosecute him on a child rape charge. Juab County Attorney David Leavitt said he has subpoenaed writer Carolyn Campbell to testify and hand over confidential notes used for her articles on Green's family dating back more than 15 years.

Quote of the Day
