Football’s Mistakes Cause Loss to AFA

December 2, 2001
After getting an extra week to prepare for an Air Force team that had lost five of its last six games and suspended 12 of its players for curfew violations, things were supposed to be easy for the Utah football team on Saturday. But after struggling with the Falcons' option, falling behind by 17, committing three turnovers that led to AFA touchdowns, missing an extra point, and finally blowing it all on a coaching miscommunication on the last play of the game, the Utes found themselves on the wrong side of a 38-37 score, and losers of their second straight game to end the regular season.

When UCLA's first six possessions entailed four missed field goals, a missed free throw and a shot clock violation, while the Utah women's basketball team hit four 3-pointers en route to a 16-1 lead, it seemed inevitable that the Utes would knock off the Bruins Saturday afternoon.

Utes Take Next Step in the Journey

December 2, 2001
When Utah volleyball seniors Adrianne Bradley-Drake and McKelle Stilson combined to block the attack of Utah State's Shauni Fluckiger last Friday night, it was not only the conclusion of the teams' second-round NCAA matchup, it was a culmination, of sorts, of a journey that has been 12 years in the making.

The U men's basketball team used 71.4 percent shooting from 3-point land to snap a two-game skid and score an 81-74 win over Pepperdine Saturday night. Utah (3-2) bounced back from its first consecutive non conference losses since 1994, using defensive aggression, unselfishness and exceptional shooting from the opening tip.

The blasts killed the assailants and 10 bystanders and wounded 150 people. Minutes after the back-to back suicide bombings, another bomb went off in a car parked nearby, sending panicked, screaming pedestrians running in all directions.

Football Trying Not to Look Past Air Force

November 30, 2001
Utah football coach Ron McBride is concerned that, with this week's announcement that his Utes would be participating in the Christmas day Las Vegas Bowl, they might be inclined to overlook Air Force this Saturday. AFA head man Fisher DeBerry, meanwhile, was concerned about a dozen of his players overlooking curfew following last week's 52-30 loss at Hawaii.

Men’s Basketball to Take on Pepperdine

November 30, 2001
Three days ago, this Saturday's opponent for the Utah men's basketball team appeared to be a relief. The Pepperdine Waves were 1-1, coming off a 75-58 win over Cal-State Fullerton and a 96-93 double overtime loss to UC-Irvine. Utah had beaten the Waves last year 69-56 in Malibu, Calif.

Volleyball Stomps Texas Tech

By , , and November 30, 2001
With what seemed like a sure loss in Game 2, with the Texas Tech Red Raiders up 29-25, the U women's volleyball team scored the next 6 points to win the game. The loss in Game 2 broke the Red Raiders' back, and the Utes took Game 3 and the match, 30-24, 31-29, 30-23.

Women’s Hoops’ Strong 2nd Half Beats Oregon St

November 30, 2001
A ragged first half marked by turnovers and an excessive outside emphasis had the Utah women's basketball team in danger of losing its second straight contest and dropping a game below the break-even mark Thursday night. The second half, however, saw the Utes register sufficient enough improvement to score a hard-fought 58-46 victory over Pac-10 entrant Oregon State and move to 3-2 overall on the year.
