New Nursing Prof, Other Profs Honored

Nursing Prof Appointed Kathleen Mooney, professor in the U's College of Nursing, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Institute of Medicine's National Cancer Policy Board. The Institute of Medicine is part of the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Cancer Policy Board addresses issues that arise in prevention, control, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

After 14-year-old Federal Heights resident Elizabeth Smart was found missing, the community showed an outpouring of support, time and effort?and the U community was no exception. As the lawn of Shriners Hospital filled with camera crews, food suppliers and first aid tents, volunteers from the U?including about 20 U football players and their coaches?came to provide their services.

Regents Allow Diversity to Be Factored In

During a meeting in May, the state Board of Regents agreed on a policy update aimed at increasing diversity at the state's colleges and universities. The policy, originally set in 1977, stated the Utah System of Higher Education prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, gender, pregnancy or military service while promoting equal opportunity and diversity.

Law Professor To Teach Short Course in Cuba

For the first time ever, a member of the U law school faculty will travel to Cuba to teach and conduct research. Erik Luna, an associate professor specializing in criminal justice, will teach a three-week course at the University of Havana?the country's oldest and most prestigious institution.

I think it's fine. The TRAX line was definitely needed. They're planting new trees to take the place of the old ones, and the new trees will eventually grow back. It's a loss in the short run, but a gain in the long run. Tiffin Brough, Senior, Conflict and Human Diversity If they want to put in a train line that keeps people from driving, that's great.

Budget Cuts Hit Library’s Print Version Periodical Collections

As part of its share of the U's budget cut, the U Marriott Library will have to trim $300,000 by July 1 in order to meet budget requirements. With the budget decrease, the Marriott Library will have to let go of eight unfilled full-time job positions, along with decreasing its collection of periodical subscriptions.
