U student Keval Patel died May 23, after classmates found him unconscious in the HPER Complex dive pool the evening of May 22. Proposed Majors Will Not Create Additional Costs

U administrators say they will make cuts to academic departments to balance the budget, while they are simultaneously creating others. During May, the Academic Senate and Board of Trustees approved three new majors for fall, 2002. At the same time, lawmakers have announced that in June they will need to cut another $138 million from the state budget.

ASUU Pres Statewide Student Leader

Newly elected U student body president Billy Edwards is also the student leader for more than 120,000 students in the state. Edwards was elected president of the Utah Student Association by the Utah Council of Student Body Presidents in May. The Utah Student Association is made up of student leaders from nine state institutions as well as Brigham Young University and Westminster.

Men’s Tennis Duo Falls At NCAA Tournament

The top Utah men's tennis doubles unit, the No. 23-ranked team of seniors David Mercier and Nik Yip, fell in the first round at the NCAA Championships doubles tournament, held on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. The two Utes, the only U representatives at the NCAA Championships, lost in the first round of 32 to a team from Auburn University in the two teams' final set.
