Letter to the Editor: Carrying on a Senator’s Legacy

Editor: I have read several of John Morley's columns and have found his past editorials to be both thoughtful and well argued. Unfortunately, his column regarding hate crimes legislation in Utah doesn't fall into either category. First, we need to remember that Senator Suazo is a school teacher, not a politician.

The Chronicle’s View: U Takes Higher Ground in Lawsuit

By , , and March 12, 2002
Even though the legislative dust has settled, the showdown hasn't even begun. In an announcement on Tuesday, the U "filed a request for a declaratory judgement in U.S. District Court seeking to retain the U's right to keep guns off campus." What does this mean? In the great American tradition, when something doesn't go your way, you bring in the lawyers?and that's exactly what the U has done.

By , , and March 12, 2002
The Utah State Legislature reached the end of its not quite-45 day session last week, and politically moderate Utahns have but one thing to say: "Phew!" OAK HARBOR, Ohio?Acid leaking from a nuclear plant ate a 6-inch hole in a steel cap that covers the plant's reactor, federal inspectors said. The regulatory commission has alerted the nation's 102 other commercial nuclear plants to watch for similar problems.

U Ski Team Has Ten Named All-America

March 12, 2002
The U ski team's third placement at the NCAA Championships may not have been the end result Ute skiers hoped for, but at least they have the consolation prize of a bevy of All-Americans. "The fact that we had 10 All Americans is a big credit to our team this season," said U coach Kevin Sweeney.

MWC Sends Seven to NCAAS

March 12, 2002
While local attention is obviously and deservedly being concentrated upon the U men's basketball team's selection into the NCAA Tournament, the fact that the Mountain West Conference, three-year old separatist that it is, is sending six other teams as well, has come in under some people's radar.
