Geologist Gets Pettijohn Medal

Poet and world-renowned sedimentologist Dane "Duke" Picard, a professor at the U for 34 years, has been awarded the 2002 Pettijohn Medal for excellence in sedimentology. Picard, who retired in January, will receive the award at a ceremony in Houston on March 12, hosted by the Society for Sedimentary Geology.

I spent the Olympic break outside of my comfort zone. Nobody knew me, and unlike college students bogged down with more important things like grades and money, my co workers wanted to know me. After "What is your name?" and "Do you go to the U?" somebody always asked "What is your major?" That is the question I dreaded at every handshake and have frantically tried to prepare for at every Thanksgiving and family reunion.

Letter to the Editor: A Disappointing Attitude on Hate Crimes

Editor: I was greatly disturbed and saddened by John Morley's March 5 opinion column, "Real Debate Over Hate Crime Bill Impossible," on the defeated hate crime bill. What disappointed me was Mr. Morley's attitude concerning the bill. He implies that because Utah has a statistically small hate crime problem and because the Legislature has other issues on which to concentrate, the victims of hate crimes do not deserve justice.

The Utah ski team finished second for the third time in five season meets March 28 at the NCAA Regional Championships in Anchorage, Alaska. But perhaps the most important placing was not of the Utes, but of Denver University. Denver, which had won every Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association tournament going into Regionals, slipped to third place, and Colorado took first.

Math has never been Harry Albert's strong suit. But that didn't stop the sociology and hotel studies double major from solving a puzzle that has stumped mathematicians for decades. On Friday morning, Albert divided by zero. "Centuries of work, mountains of paper covered in equations, and it hasn't been done until now," said Horace Everett, a U professor of theoretical mathematics.

Shortened Session Scandalizes Democratic Process

While lawmakers attempt to create statutes governing our society, the 2002 session proves the Utah State Legislature can't effectively govern itself. Instead of extending the session to run for the six weeks required by Utah's Constitution, legislators have two fewer weeks than normal to set the state's budget and pass its laws.
