New Afghan Government Sets Taliban Officers Free

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan?The Taliban justice minister and several other high-ranking figures of the ousted ruling militia surrendered to the new Afghan government but were allowed to go free, a Kandahar commander said Wednesday, despite U.S. requests for the handover of top Taliban leaders.

Kingsbury Hall Forms a Student Council

The group mainly responsible for bringing Bill Cosby and Marcel Marceau to the U needs student input. Kingsbury Hall is forming a student council to gain feedback on selecting artists to present and on marketing those events to the students. The council currently has five students serving on it, but they hope to have 20 students soon.

U Recognized as National Leader in Energy Conservation

A study of 891 campus environments highlights the U and 13 other schools as nationwide leaders in energy efficiency and conservation. However, the U was not recognized in the other areas, such as environmentally friendly campus transportation, academic environmental disciplines, recycling, landscape conservation and environmental management policy.

Business Denied Travel Into Cuba

WASHINGTON?In denying a leading U.S. agribusiness group the right to travel to Cuba, the Treasury Department has touched off complaints that it has no fixed guidelines on who should be allowed to visit the communist island. An Illinois-based nonprofit group, the Farm Foundation, had hoped to send about 100 people, including two former agriculture secretaries, to Cuba last week on a fact finding mission.

Kofoed Named to SoccerBuzz All-West Team

U soccer star Amy Kofoed, who finished her eligibility this past year, earned another accolade as a member of SoccerBuzz magazine's All West Second Team. This is the second consecutive year she has received this honor. She made the Third Team as a sophomore.

Hansen to Retire At End of Term

SALT LAKE CITY?U.S. Rep. Jim Hansen, a conservative Republican who worked to keep Western lands open for mining and ranching, said Tuesday he will retire from the post he has held for 21 years. Hansen, 69, said he will not seek re-election to the House of Representatives when his term expires at the end of the year.
