U officials are preparing to respond to state lawmakers' questions and concerns involving the campus' concealed weapons policy. Legislators have called a hearing for Jan. 14 that may lead to a repeal of the U's no gun policy. The policy prohibiting all guns on campus came under fire when Attorney General Mark Shurtleff presented legislative leaders with his formal opinion about Utah gun laws in early December.

By and January 3, 2002
Students going to the Crimson Underground are in for a surprise. Stage lights now showcase bananas, desserts and a sandwich bar instead of a local performer. Waffle irons and cereal dispensers now occupy the space regularly used for computers. These differences reflect the change that took place during the Winter Break.

Talking to Media Gets Parking Employee Fired

By and January 3, 2002
Parking officials fired Appeal Officer Elisabeth Wilkinson in early December following a dispute with a donor's son. She lost her job because she talked to the newspaper about something "corrupt" that happened at parking services, she said. The son of prominent U donors came into parking services Tuesday "threatening" that his family would withdraw funds if a boot wasn't taken off his girlfriend's car and her fines nullified, said Wilkinson, a senior studying psychology.

Skiers Begin Season in Montana Today

January 3, 2002
With all of the exposure the 2002 Olympic Winter Games will bring the Utah ski team, it also brings temporary headaches. The U ski team opens its 2002 season short on practice time and may be without a top cross country skier as the Montana Invitational begins today in Bozeman, Mont.

BCS Mess Gets Final Showcase at Rose Bowl

January 3, 2002
Those weenies who run the Bowl Championship Series better be thanking their Bear Bryant voodoo dolls that Miami whipped the corn-infested snot out of Nebraska in Thursday night's Rose Bowl, because they'd have looked dumber than George O'Leary if the results had been otherwise.

Swimmers Spent Break at Practice

January 3, 2002
The U swimmers probably didn't sleep in as much as the average student over the Winter Break. They were busy training in Colorado Springs, Colo. At the Air Force Invitational, the U swim team got a chance to train and compete at the Olympic Training Facility.

Getting Medicine Down Despite Tainted Recruitment

January 3, 2002
Whenever I overhear, or personally have a conversation about, the struggles of life as a U student, I inevitably hear the phrase, "Well, your problems are because the U is a commuter campus." All right, that's all well and good, but that statement has become one whopping, ambiguous clich, catchphrase, catch-it-all-in-one-net scapegoat.

Student Suing U Will Run for ASUU President

January 3, 2002
Steve Rinehart did not intend to run for student body president, but after he filed a lawsuit against parking services, many students asked him to. "I've received countless emails from students," he said. "It's not something I had ever planned on." However, the second-year law student suing the U announced he will run with Annie Deprey, who is also a law student.
