Women’s Hoops Faces Albertson

Two games into the regular season, the Utah women's basketball team will be playing an exhibition match tonight. Sure, the schedule says the Utes' matchup with Albertson College (of Idaho) is a full fledged regular-season affair, but after reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, taking on an opponent whose own slate includes such luminaries as Linfield College, Westmont College and Carroll College, constitutes little more than glorified practice time.

Football Will Focus on Its Final Game

Most any other year, a loss to BYU, like in Saturday's 24 21 defeat, would mark the end of the season for the Utah football team. The Utes would have time to reflect on blowing an 11-point, fourth-quarter lead, time to reconcile the idea of letting their biggest game of the year slip through their fingers before eventually preparing for a bowl game or clearing out their lockers.

Soccer Players Say That Coach Was Kicked Out

Amy Winslow was the only soccer coach the University of Utah has ever known. In her seven years at the helm, Winslow compiled a 77-53-5 record?a winning percentage of 57 percent. But when she announced that she was resigning (along with husband and assistant Jim) on Nov. 15 at a team meeting?just one week after the Utes were ousted in the MWC Tournament semifinals?some of her players questioned whether it was her choice, especially when her release included the phrase, "pursue other interests"?which tends to imply the decision came from elsewhere.

The Chronicle’s View: Providing a Vital College Opportunity

Many around the state still look at the University of Utah as the ivory tower on the foothills, where rich east siders get a nice education and the west-siders make their lunch, answer their phones or clean their offices. While this may, in part, be true, it doesn't please U President Bernie Machen or Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, and they plan to do something about it.

BLUFFDALE?Utah's Homeland Security Center hasn't seen much action since its opening more than a month ago, but public safety officials are calling the agency a success. From an antennae-spiked building on a hilltop overlooking Camp Williams, about 15 miles south of Salt Lake City, the security post stands guard against terrorism.

WASHINGTON?The Pentagon hopes Afghans motivated by the Taliban's collapse and millions in U.S. reward money will find Osama bin Laden's hide-out so U.S. troops won't have to hunt cave-to-cave for him, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Monday. President Bush said gains by anti-Taliban forces gave him encouragement that the military was closing in on bin Laden.

Trustees Endorse Application by U Humanities for Rocky Mtn. Center

The University of Utah College of Humanities is trying to be one of a kind. In early August, the U applied to become a regional center of the National Endowment for the Humanities. On Friday, the U Board of Trustees reviewed the proposal and endorsed the idea.
