Down With U, Up With Ed Factory

I'm sick of people at the University of Utah whining about how they don't get enough funding. I've had it up to here with demands that higher education be improved. I'm fed up with faculty and students who think the U is important to this state. Too much money goes to the U. Too little education comes out of it. For a long time now, the state Legislature has given the U too much priority on its funding list. This has to stop.

The Chronicle’s View: Equality in Service to United States

November 19, 2001
For the young men who are now turning in their selective service cards at the post office, the idea of a new draft doesn't seem all that far-fetched. Our country is entrenched in a battle, not only against the Taliban and al Qaeda, but against terrorism worldwide. That will take incredible resources, both financial and human. And while our military is capable of handling the current situation, no one knows what tomorrow will bring. This new sense of uncertainty is now a part of our reality, where the young men think about what it must be like to be in a war.

Federal Regulations Don’t Stop Airline Turbulance

November 19, 2001
If someone tried carrying three sticks of dynamite through the airport, would security notice? Not in Salt Lake City. Since January, 1980, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has documented 4,160 security breaches at Salt Lake International Airport. The FAA routinely plants weapons and fake explosives in passenger bags, testing safety procedures. Too often the procedures fail, as in the case of three dynamite sticks and a ticking clock that passed through Southwest Airlines' security.

Ute Swimmers Split Meet Against Pacific

November 19, 2001
The men's swimming and diving team scored its first win of the season Friday night against Pacific, by a score of 147.5 to 80.5. The women's team fell to Pacific, 127-94, but then downed San Diego State Saturday afternoon, 166-120. For the men, freshman Cody Rempfer had first-place finishes in the 400-meter individual medley and 100-meter butterfly, while Jonathan Hanna won the 1,000 meter freestyle with a time of nine minutes, 56.12 seconds, Evan Castro won the 200-meter and 500-meter freestyle races, and David Johnson finished first in the 100-meter backstroke, at 53.41 seconds.

U Volleyball Wins MWC Tournament in Rally Over CSU

November 19, 2001
PROVO?The dream was over. After being beaten in the first two games, the University of Utah volleyball team was facing a wall that should have been too high to climb. Colorado State had not lost a game all tournament long and looked to continue the tournament sweep as it entered Game 3 of Saturday's championship matchup with the Utes.

U’s Only-Ever Soccer Coach Leaves Team

November 19, 2001
University of Utah's soccer coach Amy Winslow resigned as head coach Friday. Winslow has served as the only coach in the seven years of women's soccer at Utah. During her tenure at Utah, Winslow racked up a 77-35-5 record and led her team to the co championship of the Mountain West Conference in 1999.

Majerus Not Happy With U’s Poor Play

November 19, 2001
The final score read 74-55 in the Utah men's basketball team's season-opening win Friday. The Utes' game against NAIA opponent St. Francis was tied once in the early going at 2-2, but the Utes held a double-digit lead from the 10:37 mark in the first half until the game's end. So why was coach Rick Majerus so critical of his team following the win?

Utes Allow Pair of TDs in Last Three Minutes of Game

November 19, 2001
PROVO?The Utah football team said that if it could control the clock with its power-running, ball-control offense, if it could keep BYU quarterback Brandon Doman contained in the pocket, if it could swarm Cougar running back Luke Staley, then it could knock off the eighth-ranked and undefeated Cougs. And the Utes did it all for the first 44 minutes, 13 seconds of Saturday's game.

Women’s Hoops Earns Split

November 19, 2001
The 25th-ranked Utah women's basketball team already has one fourth the number of losses that last year's team did, but only one 28th of the wins. So, that would put the Utes at 1-1.
