PROVO?Spanish-speaking teen-agers at Timpview High School are being sought out to help mentor younger students. The 35 high school students are assigned to schools within Provo School District to tutor other Spanish-speaking students. Jose Enriquez, the program coordinator, said the mentors fill an important role.

Israelis Arrest 45 Residents, Kill 1

TEL, West Bank?In a 10 hour raid Monday on a Palestinian village, Israeli troops killed an Islamic militant and arrested 45 residents, including 16 on Israel's wanted list. Israel also continued to hold parts of two Palestinian towns in the northern part of the West Bank.

Issues May Start New WTO Talks

DOHA, Qatar?With a deadline looming, movement on two issues important to the United States raised hopes Monday that the World Trade Organization would clinch a deal allowing a new round of global trade talks to start. Progress was reported on the text of a document that would assure poor countries that WTO rules protecting patents on pharmaceuticals developed by big drug companies in the West don't prevent them from responding to public health crises like AIDS.

Local Beer Advertisements Done in Bad Taste

Most University of Utah students have heard of Wasatch Brewery's beer. Some of them have probably had a swig or two. The brewery is famous for its subtle (and sometimes not so-subtle) jabs at Mormon subculture. Its billboards make supposedly humorous comparisons between Utah's dominant faith and the company's "flavorful beverages.

SALT LAKE CITY?Some 230,000 tickets to 100 medal events in three sports and ceremonies for the 2002 Paralympics went on sale Monday. The Paralympics, scheduled for March 7-16, will bring about 1,000 disabled athletes from 36 countries to compete in Alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, biathlon and ice sledge hockey.
